Joint Pain at 40: Understanding Arthritis in Bangladesh

Arthritis isn't just an old person's disease in Bangladesh. With rising obesity and sedentary lifestyles, joint pain is hitting people earlier.

When your knees creak climbing stairs, your fingers feel stiff in the morning, or your hips ache after sitting too long — most Bangladeshis chalk it up to 'getting old.' But joint pain at 40 or even 35 isn't normal, and it's not something you should just accept.

Types of Arthritis Common in Bangladesh

    Osteoarthritis (OA):
The most common type. Wear and tear of the cartilage in joints. Affects knees (very common), hips, hands, and spine. Risk factors: obesity, past injuries, repetitive stress (think garment workers, farmers).

    Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA):
An autoimmune disease where your immune system attacks joint lining. Affects women 3 times more than men. Causes symmetric joint swelling (both hands, both knees). Needs early, aggressive treatment.

    Gout:
Sudden, severe pain in a single joint (usually big toe). Caused by high uric acid levels. Risk factors: red meat, organ meats, sugary drinks. Very treatable once diagnosed.

    Warning Signs You Shouldn't Ignore

    • Morning stiffness lasting more than 30 minutes
    • Joint swelling, warmth, or redness
    • Pain that wakes you at night
    • Joint pain with fever
    • Reduced range of motion
    • Pain in the same joints on both sides

    Management

    For Osteoarthritis:

    • Weight loss is the single most effective treatment for knee OA. Losing 5 kg reduces knee stress by 20 kg.
    • Regular, gentle exercise (swimming, cycling, walking).
    • Physiotherapy for targeted strength exercises.
    • Paracetamol first, then topical NSAIDs. Oral painkillers as needed.
    • Joint replacement for severe cases (available in Dhaka).

    For Rheumatoid Arthritis:

    • See a rheumatologist early. Do NOT delay.
    • Disease-modifying drugs (DMARDs like Methotrexate) can prevent joint destruction if started early.
    • Regular blood monitoring is needed.

Arthritis doesn't have to control your life. Early diagnosis and proper management keep you active and pain-free.
